Abstract The Charleston Free Library, Charleston's first public library, opened its doors on January 1, 1931. The establishment of this library was made possible with the support of the Julius Rosenwald Fund. A grand total of $80,000 was awarded to the Free Charleston Library with the goal of “enabling the county to get this service started with the best possible standards.” The funds were distributed over a five year period. Abstract

Collection consists of two scrapbooks containing photographs, clippings, tickets, invitations, raffle lists, guest lists, and other assorted ephemera related to the Ladies Night Out annual fundraising event held by the Sisterhood of Synagogue Emanu-El to benefit Emanu-El synagogue, Charleston's first Conservative congregation. Sunny Steinberg, co-chair of Ladies Night Out from 2000 to 2010, compiled both scrapbooks.

Abstract The Rosenwald Schools Initiative was founded by Tuskegee Institute founder, Booker T. Washington and Sears and Roebuck Co. president, Julius Rosenwald in 1912. Washington saw the need to build schools for African Americans, particularly in rural areas across the South and Rosenwald was looking for a charitable opportunity to support and expressed interest in the plight of the Black community. Records of Synagogue Emanu-El, the first conservative synagogue in Charleston, South Carolina. Materials document the administrative, social, educational, and spiritual activities of the congregation and its members. Also included are the records of Emanu-El’s Sisterhood, which provides major financial support for the synagogue.
