Edward Hyrne letter, 1700 (photocopy)

Collection Overview The document is a photocopy of a letter sent from Charleston to England. It was written by Edward Hyrne to his wife, who is only identified as "My Dear Love," on October 19, 1700. In the letter, Hyrne described a hurricane that hit Charleston on September 30, 1700. He also gave a brief account of life in the city. A typescript of the letter is also included in the collection. Abstract A Charleston (S.C.) orphanage for African American children, founded in 1891 by Reverend Daniel Joseph Jenkins. The Orphan Aid Society (chartered 1892) was the governing board of the orphanage. Organized by members of the church where Reverend Jenkins was pastor, the Society furnished much of the financial support for the orphanage's efforts to provide education, training, skills, and care to orphans, half orphans, and destitute children. Eva Jessye papers

Abstract

Eva Jessye was born in Coffeyville, Kansas on January 20, 1895. She attended Western University and Langston University, receiving her BA in 1919. In 1935, Jessye became the choral director for the premiere production of George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess. In the 1980s, Jessye was appointed the Kansas Ambassdaor for the Arts by Governor John Carlin who created the post for her.
