Abstract William Lawrence (1895-1981) was born in Charleston, South Carolina to Merton and Sylvia Lawrence. He studied piano, organ, and voice at the Avery Institute (early 1900s), at the New England Conservatory of Music (1913-1916) and in Paris, France (1926-1931). The papers consist of two unpublished manuscripts on poetry. The first manuscript "Poetry parts or the grammar of poetry" and the second manuscript "Poetry patterns (explicitly explained)" define the different forms and structures of poetry using poems of well-known and obscure poets. Both manuscripts include a typescript and a carbon copy. Included in the manuscripts are two 1922 photographs of Miss Theodore and ten drawings from her "Do You Know" series.
