Collection Overview

The papers consist of school notes, lectures, lab drawings, essays, exams and papers in education, literature, zoology, psychology, history, botany, fine arts and health. Other items include lectures on child welfare, guidance, and curriculum. Five duplicate cassette tapes of 7.5 hours of interviews with Mabel L. Pollitzer are from the Winthrop College Archives (Rock Hill, S.C.). These interviews are recollections of her work as a teacher, her participation on library and museum boards and her involvement with suffrage campaigning in Charleston.

Biographical Note

Mabel L. Pollitzer was born in Charleston, S.C. She was the daughter of Gustave M. Pollitzer and Clara Guinzburg Pollitzer. Her sisters Carrie Teller Pollitzer (1881- 1974) and Anita Pollitzer (1894-1975) were both active in the women's rights movement. Mabel L. Pollitzer was a teacher, civic leader and women's rights activist. She attended Craft School, Memminger Normal School, the College of Charleston and Columbia University. She taught at Memminger High School for fifty years and was active in many community organizations. She served as South Carolina chair of the National Woman's Party.
