Collection Overview

The papers consist of two unpublished manuscripts on poetry. The first manuscript "Poetry parts or the grammar of poetry" and the second manuscript "Poetry patterns (explicitly explained)" define the different forms and structures of poetry using poems of well-known and obscure poets. Both manuscripts include a typescript and a carbon copy. Included in the manuscripts are two 1922 photographs of Miss Theodore and ten drawings from her "Do You Know" series.

Biographical Note

Mary Felicia Theodore was born in Charleston, S.C. She graduated from the School of Pharmacy at the Medical College of South Carolina. She took courses at the College of Charleston, The Citadel and Columbia College. She and her sister conducted a private school in her home for twenty five years. Miss Theodore's poetry was published in Anthology of Women Poets (1937), The North American Book of Verse (1939), The Choir Sings (1939) and in the Charleston Evening Post from 1930 through 1951. She published When they were young (1959), My thoughts in verse (1971) and Figures of speech and style in poetry (1976).
