St. Mark's Episcopal Church was organized as an independent parish in 1865 by a group of prominent black Episcopalians who were without a place to worship- since most of the white Episcopalian churches were evacuated in Charleston as a result of the city's occupation by Union Forces. The papers consist of two unpublished manuscripts on poetry. The first manuscript "Poetry parts or the grammar of poetry" and the second manuscript "Poetry patterns (explicitly explained)" define the different forms and structures of poetry using poems of well-known and obscure poets. Both manuscripts include a typescript and a carbon copy. Included in the manuscripts are two 1922 photographs of Miss Theodore and ten drawings from her "Do You Know" series.
