Laing School was founded January 29, 1866 by Cornelia Hancock (1839-1926), under the auspices of the Friends Association for the Aid and Elevation of the Freedmen of Philadelphia. The school began with 50 African American students in the damaged remains of the Mount Pleasant Presbyterian church in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Albertha Johnston Murray (1889-1969) was an African American educator born in Charleston, South Carolina to William Henry and Mary Ellen Virgin Johnston. Murray retired from the teaching profession in 1959, and remained active in numerous educational, social, and humanitarian organizations. Cleveland Sellers, Jr. (born 1944), an African American from Denmark, South Carolina, was a participant and leader of a variety of student, civil rights, leftist, and Pan African movements in the 1960s and 1970s.
