Biographical Note

In the 1940s, Isabelle Smalls-Griffin was a student at the Avery Normal Institute. During her time at Avery, she was a member of the basketball athletic council and participated in recitals. She graduated as an honor student from Avery Normal Institute in 1950. Later attending South Carolina State College, majoring in health and physical education and minoring in biology.

Isabelle Smalls-Griffin, an African American educator, began her teaching career at Baptist Hill High School in 1958. She taught physical science and physical education. At Baptist Hill, Griffin was actively involved in various positions, such as the Human Relations Task Force, homecoming committee, and she coached the girls’ basketball team. She was a member of the YWCA, Charleston County Education Association, the National Education Association, and the Zion-Olivet United Presbyterian Church.
