J. Arthur Brown was born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1914. After graduating from the Avery Institute in 1932, he continued his education at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, SC, graduating in 1937. While at SCSC, J. Arthur Brown met his future wife MaeDe Esperanza Myers (1918-2012), marrying in 1940. Septima Poinsette Clark (1898-1987) was born in Charleston, South Carolina to Peter Porcher Poinsette and Victoria Anderson. Clark attended small private schools and Avery Institute, getting a teacher's certificate in 1916. She married Nerie Clark (1889-1925) of North Carolina, a navy cook in 1920; they had one surviving child Nerie Clark, Jr. (born 1925). The Gadsden Funeral Home was founded in 1902 by Eugene Gadsden (1866-1928) as the Eugene Gadsden Company. It was one of the first funeral homes for African Americans in Charleston. Henry Lacy Grant (1925-1990) was born in North Augusta, Georgia to Henry L. Grant and Lillie Lacy Grant. An ordained Episcopal priest, Father Grant served the East Side community of Charleston, South Carolina for over twenty years as director of St. John's Mission Center and priest of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Cleveland Sellers, Jr. (born 1944), an African American from Denmark, South Carolina, was a participant and leader of a variety of student, civil rights, leftist, and Pan African movements in the 1960s and 1970s.
