The collection consists of the surviving records of Brith Sholom, an orthodox congregation founded in Charleston, South Carolina in 1852, Beth Israel, another orthodox Charleston congregation founded in 1911, and the records of Brith Sholom Beth Israel founded in 1954 when the two congregations merged. Abstract
The Friendly Union Society was formed in Charleston in 1813. It consisted of a membership of no more than fifty men and no less than five. It was formed for the relief of orphans and widows in the community; and to provide for the general welfare of the community as a whole. It also served as a burial society; providing a place for interment, as well as tending and upkeep of the cemetery. This society remained in Charleston in varying degrees of activity through 1981.
