Alphonso W. Hoursey was born in 1900 and raised in Charleston. He attended the Avery Normal Institute, Fisk University (1926), and the University of Michigan. After graduating from Fisk, Hoursey taught at the Avery Normal Institute, organized the HI-Y Club, which prioritized a ‘Protestant Ethic’ and sportsmanship.
