Scope and Contents

The collection contains two (2) series:

Series 1: Project Organizational Documents and Research: 1989-1991, and undated

This series provides an orientation to the directory project with correspondence, the formation of the directory with several drafts, research documents of photocopied book excerpts and essays and various notes.

Series 2: Charleston County Black Schools: 1930-1991, and undated; bulk dates: 1989-1991, and undated

Most files in this series holds a worksheet entitled, "Guidelines for Organizing School Histories," and typed or handwritten index card. Many files have scant/brief information and is indicated as such.

The school locations included are: Adams Run, Awendaw, East Cooper, Edisto Island, James Island, Johns Island, McClellanville, North Charleston, Peninsular, Ravenel, St. Andrews District #10, Wadmalaw Island, and Yonges Island.

The schools are organized by cities/towns in alphabetical order.

Biographical / Historical

"The Directory of Charleston County Black Schools (was) an extensive projection of the Avery Research Center (for African American History and Culture). The goal of this directory was to achieve a composite listing of Charleston schools historically established for African Americans." The directory was complied as "an extension of a 1989 research conference entitled, "The History of African American Education in Charleston, South Carolina." This conference insituted the documentation of "the long stuggle of Blacks to properly educated their children, despite the laws and customs which hindered them."

The directory project was organized and administered by the following:

Directory Research Committee: Minerva King, Julia Pope, Sherman Pyatt.

This directory was completed in 1991.

Abstract

Originally titled, "The Directory of Charleston County Black Schools," this project was organized by staff and volunteers at the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture, circa 1991. The goal was to identify and research Charleston School District public elementary and high schools which taught Black students. The project also included the identification of kindergartens, private residential and parochial schools.
