Collection Overview

Papers (1872-1940) relating to Lancelot Minor Harris include a Harris genealogy, funeral arrangements for Harris, correspondence, Harris family financial papers, Indiana University yearbooks, items from Harris's travels in the United States and Europe, sketches, ephemera, notes, published and unpublished writings, and photographs.

Letters to Harris from family, friends, colleagues, and others concern professional and family matters. Correspondents include James Easterby, DuBose Heyward, Ludwig Lewisohn (including typescripts of unpublished poems), Herbert Ravenel Sass, Albert Simons, Thomas Tobias, and others.

Notes and notebooks pertain to Harris' classes and writings. A catalog of Harris's writing prepared by Paul Weidner is included. Writings, both cataloged and uncataloged include clippings, printed articles, a typed diary (1910), speeches, a holograph, and typed prose and poetry. Included are Carlotta Harris's miscellaneous papers and letters from family and friends concerning personal and family matters. The correspondence of other family members is also included. Photographs are of various locations in Charleston, S.C. and of family and friends.

Biographical Note

Lancelot Minor Harris was a professor of English at the College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina for 43 years. His father was a professor at the University of Virginia. Harris graduated from Washington and Lee in 1888, then taught Latin at Tulane High School in New Orleans for a year before returning to Washington and Lee to teach German and Latin. While working on his Ph. D. at Johns Hopkins University, Harris became an instructor of English at Indiana University. Upon graduating Harris accepted a position at Charleston, Harris married Carlotta Letitia Morrow Hill (b. 1865) in 1917.

The Lancelot Minor Harris papers contains personal papers, correspondence, and written materials. Correspondents include James Easterby, DuBose Heyward, Ludwig Lewisohn, Herbert Ravenel Sass, Albert Simons, Thomas Tobias, and others. Written materials include notes concerning Harris' classes and personal writing, prepared by Paul Weidner. Also included in the collection are the personal papers and correspondence of Carlotta Harris.

Collection Arrangement

The collection is arranged by topic into 8 series. The first series contains biographical and 18th century genealogical materials, as well as funeral arrangements. The second series is comprised of correspondence between Harris, friends, and family. The third series is made up of personal papers; diplomas, financial papers, letters of recommendation, a marriage certificate, passports, etc. The fourth series is a compilation of Lancelot Minor Harris' writings, both published and unpublished. The fifth series is devoted to the correspondence of Carlotta Harris, friends, and family. The sixth series contains the correspondence of the Harris's family and friends. The seventh series is a compilation of photographs taken of Charleston, South Carolina, family, and friends. The eigth series is comprised of additions, including correspondence, notes, lectures, and research papers.
