Biographical Note
Lynn Dugan was born on November 16, 1950 in New York, New York. She grew up in New York City, and lived in Greenwich Village in the 1970s after coming out as a lesbian. Dugan left New York City to live in Boulder, Colorado, for ten years. She later moved in briefly with her brother in Rock Hill, South Carolina. In 2003 she attended South Carolina Pride, held in Columbia, South Carolina. Dugan met Charlie Smith, one of the founders of the Alliance for Full Acceptance, at the parade, and he invited her to move to Charleston, South Carolina. After moving to Charleston in 2003, she started the Charleston Social Club as a social group to meet lesbians and allied women in the area, holding events like outdoor activities, parties, dances and concerts. Dugan also worked for the Charleston City Paper during this time. In 2013, Dugan celebrated the tenth-year anniversary of the club with Lezz Fest, a festival in North Charleston, South Carolina. In 2009, Dugan started organizing for the first Charleston Pride, which was held May 15, 2010. The event included a parade through the Park Circle area of North Charleston and a festival at Riverfront Park in North Charleston. Dugan stepped down from a leadership role after the first year, and was grand marshal of the parade in 2014 and again in 2019.
