Collection Overview

The collection contains photographs, correspondence, and personal papers of the Rosenberg, Winstock, and Hozore families. Also included are a family recipe, a journal, and a copy of the “The Naiad” yearbook. The bulk of the collection dates to the early 20th century. Many documents are written in Russian and Yiddish. Some photographs are labeled to indicate the family members documented.

Biographical Note

Abraham Rosenberg (1859-1920) immigrated from Poland in 1875 to Abbeville, South Carolina, to help run a family store established by his cousin Wolfe Rosenberg. In 1884, Abe opened his own clothing store in Greenwood, South Carolina. He married Rebecca Winstock in 1885. The couple had six children: Herbert Jerome (1886-1963), Sam (1887-1953), Marion (1889-1984), Ernest (2892-1978), Evelyn (1895-1996), and Helen (1898-1898). Sam Rosenberg married Blanche Brin and together they had a daughter, Rebecca Cecile Rosenberg Hozore (1918-2013).
