Historical Note

Founded in 1980 by John Edwin Mroz and Ira D. Wallach the EastWest Institute (EWI) was an international not-for-profit, non-partisan think tank focusing on international political, economic and security issues through track II (or “back-channel”) diplomacy, hosting international conferences and summits, and by producing numerous publications on international security, political, and economic issues. Initially called the Institute for East-West Security Studies, the institute initially concentrated on Cold War conflicts but after the dissolution of the Soviet Union the institute changed its name to the EastWest Institute and widened its focus and reach to include post-Cold war issues as well as issues relating to China and Central Asia. In 2021 it formed a collaborative partnership with the College of Charleston’s School of Languages, Cultures and World Affairs (LCWA) to create the John Edwin Mroz Global Leadership Institute. In addition, EWI transitioned its ongoing programmatic work to the Stimson Center, Observer Research Foundation America, the Atlantic Council, and the George H. W. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations.
