Collection Overview

Assorted papers and publications of Anita Rosen Levine, who served as secretary to the rabbi of Brith Sholom Beth Israel congregation in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1956 to 1986, and as secretary for the Addlestone Hebrew Academy. Collection consists of earlier mixed materials relating to the congregation and includes general correspondence, annual and monthly financial statements, membership applications, and receipts. The collection also contains various publications collected by Levine, including brochures, newsletters, and pamphlets related to the Charleston Jewish community. Also included is a scrapbook assembled by Levine, assorted materials relating to her brother-in-law Mordecai (Max) Levine, "Book of Life" memorial book materials, a Jewish Community Center Day Camp Baker pennant, and assorted clippings, fliers, and miscellaneous correspondence.

Biographical Note

Anita Rosen Levine was born was born in Port Chester, New York, in 1921, and lived there until her marriage to Sol Levine (1918-2003) in 1942, when she moved to Charleston, South Carolina. She served as secretary to the rabbi of Brith Sholom Beth Israel congregation in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1956 to 1986, and as secretary for Addlestone Hebrew Academy, originally named the Charleston Hebrew Institute. She was an active member of Hadassah, AMIT Women, and the BSBI Sisterhood.
