Collection Overview

The collection consists of approximately 90 photographs, 260 negatives, and three scrapbooks of Robert E. Kingsley, a U.S. Air Force staff photographer, taken during World War II, the Korean War, the 1963 fire aboard the TSMS Lakonia, a Greek-owned cruise ship that caught fire and sank, and at North and Shaw Air Force Bases in South Carolina. Also included are 16 Holocaust atrocity photographs taken at Dachau and Mauthausen concentration camps.

Biographical Note

Robert E. Kingsley joined the U.S. Army as a member of the 11th Armored Division during World War II. The division liberated Gusen and Mauthausen, two German concentration camps located in Austria.

After the war, Kingsley reentered the military and joined the Air Force. He served as an information office photographer and was stationed in Korea and South Carolina before retiring from the military in 1968.
