Historical Note

Bears Bluff Laboratories on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, was a nonprofit marine ecology research station founded in 1946 by the Slocum and Lunz Foundation. H. Jermain Slocum donated coastal land and initial funding for a laboratory, dormitory, workshops, ponds, dock and research vessel; Robert Lunz served as director of research. In 1954, Bears Bluff Laboratories partnered with the College of Charleston and Medical University of South Carolina to expand. In 1970, operations moved to the Department of Natural Resources, S.C. Marine Division at Fort Johnson on James Island, South Carolina. Bears Bluff Laboratories is now Bears Bluff National Fish Hatchery, part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
