Materials relate to Aiken's student and professional work as an architect in Boston, Massachusetts, and Cincinnati, Ohio, and as the Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department. Materials also relate to homes designed by Aiken as well as buildings designed by the New York City architectural firm McKim, Mead, and White.

Collection Overview The collection includes a letter of recommendation from Dr. Auld, late principal of the Edisto Island Academy, dated March 10, 1815, from Rev. A.P. Thayer of the Classics Department of Edisto Island Academy. In this letter, Auld mentions that Thayer kept the school open during "the recent war" (the War of 1812).
