Charleston County Black School Directory records
Abstract
The Charleston County Black School Directory is an extension of the 1989 Research Conference, "The History of African American Education in Charleston, South Carolina." The purpose of this Avery Research Center project is to begin documenting the long struggle of African Americans in the South Carolina Lowcountry to educate their children despite the laws and customs that hindered them. This collection contains information on individual historically African American schools in the area, along with survey information on these institutions. Also contains guidelines for organizing school histories and historical documentation of Charleston's African American schools.
