Scope and Contents
The Jack and Jill of America, Inc. records is divided into 5 series:
1. Personnel
The first series spans from 1977 to 2008, mainly cataloguing organizational directories, members, and committees. Additionally, other groups like the the Charleston Teens, Buttons and Bows, and Legacy Members can be identified.
The next series (1954-2008) is split between two sub-series: Records and Guides. The first sub-series houses documentation from the Charleston Chapter along with meeting notes, memos, and historical narratives. The second sub-series houses team manuals, bylaws, and developmental guides.
Researchers will be able to use this series to view the early meeting agendas and strategic planning from the inaugural 1954 Jack and Jill Charleston Chapter.
The third series, spanning from 1976 to 2009, simply showcases the events and programming hosted by the Mid-Atlantic region and the Charleston Chapter.
A comprehensive series, this media division (1975-2008) aims to highlight the visual proponents of this organization. Visitors of this collection can use this series when citing particular publilcations from the national organization, as well as photographs from the Charleston Chapter's events.
The final series highlights the achievments of this organization. Within the first sub-series there are several certifcates, plaques, and trophys obtained by local members. The second sub-series houses micellaneous memorabilia items that belonged to various team members in-which most are unidentified.

Historical
Jack and Jill of America, Inc. was founded and organized in Philadelphia, Pennsylvainia in 1938. The goal of this society was to establish a cultural union for African American mothers and thier children. This leadership organization quickly developed throughout the nation among various citites. Community members of Charleston, SC established a chapter in 1954. Although the history of this organization has met levels of contreversy, the ideas and mission plan of its administration still hold strong today: "To nurture future African American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty." Many members, past and present, of the Charleston Chapter have strong ties to the Avery Institute of African American History and Culture and the Avery Research Center.

Abstract
The Jack and Jill of America, Inc. records highlights the Charleston Chapter's members, administration, and memorabilia. While several of the items in this collection pertain to the national organization, the Mid-Atlantic region can be viewed as the main focus by incorporating significant conferences and events that showcase the Charleston Chapter's history and work within the community. Researchers can best use this collection when identifying team members of this organization, correspondence between administrative members, and visual ephemera such as photographs taken by enrolled members.
