The Hoffman family papers document several generations of the Hoffman family and their extended relatives, with a particular emphasis on the lives of Dr. Joseph Irvine Hoffman, Jr., his wife, Ellen Cecilia Wiley Hoffman, and their children, Joseph Irvine "J.I." Hoffman III and Norma Elaine Hoffman Davis. Dating from 1825 to 2025, the collection includes correspondence, personal and professional records, certificates and awards, educational materials, genealogical and family history materials, historical documents, photographs, and family albums. The collection documents the personal, educational, professional, and civic lives of members of the Hoffman family and their connections to Charleston, South Carolina, the Avery Normal Institute, and other educational, religious, medical, social, and civic institutions. Materials relating to Dr. Joseph Irvine Hoffman, Jr. include correspondence, personal documents, professional records, certificates, awards, and materials documenting his career as a physician and his involvement in community organizations within Charleston. Materials relating to Ellen Wiley Hoffman document her education, career as a musician and educator, family life, and participation in social and civic organizations. Materials relating to Norma Hoffman Davis document her education, family life, professional and personal activities, and crucial role in preserving the history of the Hoffman family. Additional materials concern extended family members and relatives, including earlier generations of the Hoffman, Wiley, Davis, Cox, and Horsey families. The collection also includes miscellaneous historical materials concerning Charleston and African American history, as well as photographs and family albums depicting multiple generations of family members, friends, social events, and community life. The collection is arranged in five series: J.
