Scope and Contents
The Guenveur family papers contain materials from two generations of the Guenveur Family dating from 1914 to 1961. Family members documented in the collection include siblings Lauretta Guenveur (née Goodall) and Baxter Douglas Goodall and two daughters of Edward Leon and Lauretta Guenveur, Florence Louise Guenveur-Streat and Helen Guenveur Smith. The collection is arranged in two subseries.
Series I: Education, 1914-1961 is the largest series and includes materials from schools, colleges, and universities that Guenveur family members attended. It is divided into four subseries arranged in chronological order of the materials. The first subseries documents Lauretta Guenveur's attendance at the Avery Normal Institute and includes her notes on classes and experiments conducted in chemistry and physics and the April, 1940 issue of the school newspaper, Avery Tiger. The second subseries documents Baxter Goodall's attendance at Howard University and includes his commencement program, yearbook, the April 29, 1929 issue of the school newspaper, and a January, 1961 issue of the school magazine. The third subseries documents Louise and Helen Guenveur's attendance at Xavier University of Louisiana and includes their commencement program, yearbooks, school newspapers and other publications, souvenirs, and Louise's scrapbook made for an elementary design class. The fourth subseries documents Helen's attendance at Meharry Medical College and includes her yearbooks from her years of attendance.
Series II: General Materials, 1918-1956 contains materials relating to the family's Catholic faith, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and ephemera.
