Scope and Contents

The Guenveur family papers contain materials from two generations of the Guenveur Family dating from 1914 to 1961. Family members documented in the collection include siblings Lauretta Guenveur (née Goodall) and Baxter Douglas Goodall and two daughters of Edward Leon and Lauretta Guenveur, Florence Louise Guenveur-Streat and Helen Guenveur Smith. The collection is arranged in two subseries.



Series I: Education, 1914-1961 is the largest series and includes materials from schools, colleges, and universities that Guenveur family members attended. It is divided into four subseries arranged in chronological order of the materials. The first subseries documents Lauretta Guenveur's attendance at the Avery Normal Institute and includes her notes on classes and experiments conducted in chemistry and physics and the April, 1940 issue of the school newspaper, Avery Tiger. The second subseries documents Baxter Goodall's attendance at Howard University and includes his commencement program, yearbook, the April 29, 1929 issue of the school newspaper, and a January, 1961 issue of the school magazine. The third subseries documents Louise and Helen Guenveur's attendance at Xavier University of Louisiana and includes their commencement program, yearbooks, school newspapers and other publications, souvenirs, and Louise's scrapbook made for an elementary design class. The fourth subseries documents Helen's attendance at Meharry Medical College and includes her yearbooks from her years of attendance.



Series II: General Materials, 1918-1956 contains materials relating to the family's Catholic faith, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and ephemera.

Biographical / Historical

Lauretta Bell Guenveur (née Goodall) was born to Rev. Lindsey Baxter and Emma Bell Goodall in Charleston, South Carolina on August 15, 1894. She was a 1915 graduate from the Avery Normal Institute and a charter member of the Entre Nous Bridge Club. She and her husband, Edward Leon Guenveur, Sr. ran a plumbing business together from their family home at 57 Coming Street in Charleston for fifty years.

Baxter Douglas Goodall was born to Rev. Lindsey Baxter and Emma Bell Goodall in Charleston, South Carolina on March 1, 1900. He graduated from the Avery Normal Institute, South Carolina State College, Howard University, and the University of Chicago. He served in the United States Navy and taught at the Joseph K. Brick Junior College in Bricks, North Carolina.

Florence Louise (Louise) Guenveur Streat was the first child born to Edward Leon and Lauretta Guenveur in Charleston, South Carolina on July 30, 1921. She graduated as the valedictorian of her class at Immaculate Conception High School and later attended and graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana and Columbia University. In 1944, she was hired as a faculty member in the Home Economics Department at Bennett College. She taught at Bennett until her retirement as Professor and Chair of the Department of Home Economics in 1984.

Helen Guenveur Smith was born to Edward Leon and Lauretta Guenveur in Charleston, South Carolina on August 3, 1923. She graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana and the Meharry Medical College's School of Dentistry. She started her private practice in Berkely, California and worked as a dentist for fifty years. After she married her husband, Sherman W. Smith, Sr., in 1954, the couple moved to Los Angeles and opened the Palm Vue Motel together. She also was the founder of the Watts Health Foundation and a cofounder of the New Frontier Democratic Club.

Abstract

The Guenveur family papers, 1914-1961, document the education of Lauretta Guenveur (née Goodall) at the Avery Normal Institute, Baxter D. Goodall at Howard University, Louise Guenveur Streat and Helen Guenveur Smith at Xavier University of Louisiana, and Helen Guenveur Smith at Meharry Medical College. Materials include yearbooks, commencement programs, class notes and scrapbooks, school newspapers and other publications, and souveniers.

Individual magazines have been separated from the Guenveur Family papers to be cataloged as part of the Avery Research Center's Library Stacks. Magazines include the June, 1946 (v. 6, no. 6) issue of Newspic, the January, 1949 (v. 4, no. 8) issue of Color, the July, 1950 (v. 5, no. 7) issue of Our World, the April 29, 1950 issue of Collier's, as well as August, 1946 (v. 1, no. 9), October, 1946 (v. 1, no. 11), June, 1947 (v. 2, no. 8), September, 1947 (v. 2, no. 11), April, 1948 (v. 3, no. 6), and May, 1948 (v. 3, no. 7) issues of Ebony.
