Scope and Contents
Part 1 of a collection of materials arranged by Emily L. Moore, the club Historian, for the centennial anniversary of the Phillis Wheatley Literary and Social Club. Materials include an essay co-authored by Moore and Cynthia McCottry-Smith titled "The Blessings of a Century 1916-2016" discussing the history of the club, the speech given by Moore at the opening of the One Hundred Years of Blessings exhibit displayed at the Avery Research Center, correspondence with the offices of President Barack Obama, Representative James Clyburn, and Senator Tim Scott and letters of recognition from each office commemorating the club's centennial anniversary, an essay written by Moore titled "Where Are the Negro Authors and Books in Our Public Library" discussing activities of the Phillis Wheatleys during the1931-1932 program year to get books written by Black authors into the public library, the script for a Ringing of the Bell Ceremony, a report from the preservation and historical documents committee, a presentation given by Moore titled "The Spirit of Phillis Wheatley Sisters: The Quiet Moments of their Relationships", and group visitor counts to the exhibit at Avery.
