Originally established during World War II to combat racial discrimination in defense industries, the FEPC met strong opposition, particularly in the South, when legislation was proposed to create a permanent Fair Employment Practices Commission (FEPC). Senator Maybank vigorously opposed the FEPC and participated in filibusters on the Senate floor to combat the legislation.
