Journal describes sightseeing in Egypt, the pyramids, circumcision ceremony, visiting the DeLeon family, etc. In Constantinople, he mentions women glimpsed in harem, & St. Sophia. He continues on to Athens, takes Turkish baths, goes to Pompeii, Capri, Paestum, Salerno, and Rome, visiting the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, etc. With worsening tuberculosis, he returns to Heidelberg and the diary abruptly ends.
