Historical Note

Founded in 1881, the Baltimore Bargain House was a mail-order wholesale business created by Jacob Epstein (1864-1945) primarily serving Jewish merchants in the South. Epstein entered into a co-partnership in 1912 with Nathan Epstein (1876-1956), Abraham I. Weinberg (1863-1932), A. Ray Katz (1877-1938), and Sidney Lansburg (1878-1958). In 1919 the Baltimore Bargain House was sold and became the American Wholesale Corporation, which was sold in 1929, becoming the American General Corporation.
