Collection primarily consists of photocopied genealogical materials relating to the Cater family of South Carolina and related families compiled by Rose-Marie Eltzroth Williams. Materials include photocopies of correspondence, research notes, genealogical charts, manuscripts, photographs, and other genealogical materials, as well as a few original documents.

Biographical Note

The Cater family immigrated to South Carolina in 1672, establishing a line of Lowcountry planters. By the late 18th century, Thomas Cater (1751-1803) was associated with the Cater Hall Plantation. Members of the family, including Lizzie C. Cater (1841-1886) and Eliza Postell Cater (1842-1893), settled in Abbeville, South Carolina.

Processing Information

Minimally processed by Sarah Meyer, February 2026. For preservation purposes, the collection was re-housed upon receipt by transferring materials into acid-free boxes, placing loose materials into acid-free folders, and removing materials from binders. Original folder titles have been retained. This finding aid may be updated periodically to account for new acquisitions to the collection and/or revisions in arrangement and description.
