Collection Overview
Collection consists of correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, certificates, medals, publications, newspaper clippings, and related materials documenting the life and naval career of Emmett P. Bonner during his service as an officer in the United States Navy. Correspondence includes both professional and personal letters. Professional correspondence relates to Bonner’s naval assignments, administrative responsibilities, commendations, professional affiliations, and other official activities. Personal letters consist primarily of communications Bonner wrote to family members during deployments, offering insight into his daily life. Photographs document Bonner’s naval service, including formal portraits, group photographs with fellow officers and enlisted personnel, shipboard life, ceremonies, and other official events. Scrapbooks compile photographs, clippings, programs, invitations, and memorabilia assembled either by Bonner or family members. Certificates consist of official documents recognizing Bonner’s promotions, qualifications, training completions, commendations, and other formal acknowledgments of achievement issued by naval or governmental authorities. Medals and awards represent honors conferred upon Bonner for service, merit, participation in campaigns, or other distinctions earned throughout his military career. Publications include programs, registrars, or other printed materials in connection with Bonner’s service and professional affiliations. Newspaper clippings contain articles, announcements, and notices relating to Bonner’s naval career, promotions, public recognition, community activities, and other notable events.

Biographical Note
Emmett P. Bonner (1918-1975) was born in Macon, Georgia, to Emmett Peyton Bonner Sr. (1866-1933) and Bessie Napier Bonner (1877-1955). He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1939. On September 2, 1942, he married Elizabeth Healy (1922-2010). During World War II, he served as gunnery officer aboard the USS St. Louis during combat operations at Okinawa and participated in minesweeping operations at the mouth of the Yangtze River. In the Korean War, Bonner commanded the destroyer USS Cogswell, leading combat operations and overseeing the landing of occupation troops in the demilitarized zone. As a Flag Officer, Bonner served as Commander of Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla 6 and as Commander of Mine Warfare Command Atlantic, based in Charleston, South Carolina. During the Vietnam War, he commanded Navy logistics operations supporting forces in South Vietnam. Bonner retired from the Navy in 1972 as a Rear Admiral after more than three decades of service.
