Historical Note

In 1937, Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington founded Brookgreen Gardens, a non-profit corporation, to preserve native flora and fauna and display objects of art within a natural setting. Within its more than 9,000 acres are the Lowcountry History and Wildlife Preserve, the Huntington Sculpture Garden, and the Center for American Sculpture. Brookgreen Gardens is a National Historic Landmark with one of the most significant collections of figurative sculpture by American artists in the world. Its collection currently contains over 900 works spanning from the early 1800s to the present. Brookgreen Gardens is located between Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island, S.C.
