Collection Overview

Collection consists of original certificate and a photocopy. The official naturalization certificate of Jacob Denemark was issued by the United States of America, State of New York, January 18, 1904. The certificate notes that Denemark appeared before the Supreme Court of the State of New York, First Judicial District and applied to become a citizen of the United States. Signed by Thomas L. Hamilton, Clerk. Document is fragile; use photocopy.

Biographical Note

Jacob Denemark was born in Poland. He immigrated to New York in 1902 and met his wife, Lizzie Seigel. The Denemarks moved south and lived in several towns including Georgetown, Mayesville, and Sumter, South Carolina, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. They eventually settled in Sumter, SC (ca. 1930) where Jacob worked as a merchant and Lizzie operated a store called The Smart Shop. The Denmarks had three children, Regina, Belle and Isidore.
