Biographical Note

Tybee "Tillie" Bogeslov Levy was born in Walkowski, Russia, and after the death of her first husband, she and her four sons (and pregnant with her fifth, Albert) immigrated to the United States in 1903 and settled in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Tybee Bogeslov supported her family by making and selling women's hats until they relocated to Walterboro, South Carolina, where Bogeslov's sister lived. In 1911, Bogeslov married Bernhard Levy (1851-1921), the Postmaster General of Colleton County. Born in the Kovna Province of Russia, Levy immigrated to the United States around 1880, and moved to Walterboro in 1891, where he owned and operated a store.
