Biographical Note
Nathaniel Russell Middleton (1810–1890), grandson of Thomas Middleton (1753–1797) and son of Henry Middleton (1717–1784), was a South Carolina plantation owner, state representative, educator, and treasurer of the City of Charleston. He served as president of the College of Charleston from 1857 to 1880.
William May Wightman (1808-1882), son of William (1781-1856) and Matilda Wightman (1780-1838), was a minister, professor, and founding chairman of the board of trustees of Wofford College. He served as Wofford College's first president from 1854 to 1859.
