Stanley B. Farbstein papers
Collection Overview
Collection primarily consists of research materials, correspondence, photographs, organization files, clippings, and other materials relating to Stanley B. Farbstein and his involvement with the Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina. The research materials reflect a comprehensive project documenting Jewish cemeteries throughout the state and include surveys, notes, photographs, drafts, and related documentation. Organization files relate to meetings, programs, and events of the Jewish Historical Society. The correspondence comprises the bulk of the collection and includes both personal and professional letters created or received by Farbstein in connection with his research and society activities. Also included are photographs and negatives relating to the Farbstein and Getz families, as well as other Jewish families in the region.

Biographical Note
Stanley B. Farbstein (1925-2014) was born in Beaufort, South Carolina and was the son of Casper (1889-1978) and Esther Getz Farbstein (1897-1991). In 1947, Farbstein graduated from Clemson Agricultural College (now Clemson University) with degrees in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. He spent much of his professional career working for the BF Goodrich Company, where he retired as the Director of Energy Affairs. Farbstein served on the executive board of the Beth Israel Synagogue in Charleston, South Carolina. He was an active member of the College of Charleston’s Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies program and the Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina.

Minimally processed by Sarah Meyer, March 2026. For preservation purposes, the collection was re-housed by transferring materials into acid-free boxes and placing documents in acid-free folders. Where possible, original folder titles have been retained. This finding aid may be updated periodically to account for new acquisitions to the collection and/or revisions in arrangement and description.
