Collection Overview
Collection primarily consists of correspondence, including original sketches, photographs, and other ephemera, with various artists from South Carolina and Georgia regarding the creation, sale, and exhibition of their work. Notable correspondents include American scene painter Horace Talmage Day and printmaker Elizabeth White. Also included are assorted articles and essays by and about Baxley.

Biographical Note
Bennett Baxley (1927-2022) was born in Hemingway, South Carolina, to Jesse James Baxley (1889-1975) and Nita Powell Baxley (1891-1964). He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, educator in the South Carolina public school system, and a recognized gardener. Additionally, Baxley was an art collector and patron of South Carolina and Georgia artists, as well as local historian of the PeeDee region and Black Mingo Swamp area in particular.

For preservation purposes, the collection was re-housed upon receipt by transferring materials into acid-free boxes and placing loose materials into acid-free folders. This finding aid may be updated periodically to account for new acquisitions to the collection and/or revisions in arrangement and description.
