Collection primarily consists of deeds and fire insurance policies related to various properties owned by the Goldman and Goldstein families in downtown Charleston, North Charleston, and Georgetown, South Carolina. Also included is a small amount of assorted financial materials, including mortgages and tax receipts.

Biographical Note

Morris and Rachael Goldman moved to Charleston, South Carolina, from Brooklyn, New York, in 1892 to open a retail clothing store at 538 King Street. Their daughter Rosie Goldman (1888–1980) married Max Goldstein (1891–1967) in 1911, who operated a tailor-made suit shop at 563 King Street. Their sons, Alwyn Goldstein (1915-2010) and Ralph Goldstein (1917-2008), owned and operated businesses in Georgetown, South Carolina, and Charleston, South Carolina.

Minimally processed by AK Stanhope, 2025. At the point of acquisition, this collection contained no original order. For preservation purposes, the collection was re-housed upon receipt by transferring materials into acid-free boxes and placing loose materials into acid-free folders. This finding aid may be updated periodically to account for new acquisitions to the collection and/or revisions in arrangement and description.”
