Biographical Note

Mendel Dumas (1875-1962) and Esther Read Dumas (1879-1949) emigrated from Lithuania to South Carolina around 1900. In 1917, Mendel purchased a pawnshop in Charleston at 220 King Street, eventually converting the business into the men’s clothing store, M. Dumas and Sons. His sons would take over the business in 1947. The couple had five children: Lenora Dumas Goldberg (1907-1993), Mary Dumas Schiff (1911-1974), Abe Dumas (1913-1998), Joe Dumas (1913-1990), and Yetta Dumas Levkoff (1916-2007). Initially members of the Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue, they later joined the Conservative Synagogue Emanu-El after World War II.
