Collection consists of assorted personal letters from James Doar Lucas to his daughter Jane Larsen Lucas Thornhill, written between 1939 to 1945. The majority of these letters were written while Lucas was stationed in Iran during World War II. Topics discussed include the weather, sightseeing in the Middle East, U.S.O. shows, and routine family matters.

Biographical Note

James Doar Lucas (1890-1958) served as an assistant harbor master and port warden in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1922 until his death in 1958. Throughout his life, he also held the positions of Lloyd's agent, underwriters' agent, and vice consul of Norway. During World War II, he served as a major in Iran, where he was the chief of port operations responsible for transporting supplies to Russia. His daughter, Jane Larsen Lucas Thornhill (1925-2019), was actively involved in community service in Charleston, serving on various boards, committees, and societies.

Minimally processed by Josh Minor, June 2025. At the point of acquisition, this collection contained no original order. For preservation purposes, the collection was rehoused upon receipt by transferring materials into acid-free boxes and placing loose materials into acid-free folders. Letters have been arranged by year. This finding aid may be updated periodically to account for new acquisitions to the collection and/or revisions in arrangement and description.
