Collection Overview

From the Collection:

The collection consists of two photograph collections and three typescript copies of articles written by Hyde. The photographs in the collection are of the South Carolina Inter-State and West Indian Exposition, 1901-1902, or were taken in the Lake Moultrie vicinity during the construction of the lake. The photographs of the Exposition consist of 25 prints mounted in an album, and depict buildings designed by Bradford Gilbert, a New York architect, and sculptures created by Louis C. Gudebrod, Charles Lopez, Carl Tefft, and Elsie Ward. The temporary buildings in the photographs were made with wood frames covered with stucco and plaster mixed with jute. The buildings were destroyed after the Exposition. The collection also contains numerous photographs from the vicinity of Lake Moultrie. These photographs were taken in 1939. This portion of the collection consists of a scrapbook with 89 mounted prints, 21 unmounted prints, and 55 largely unprinted negatives. The subjects of these photographs include cabins, churches, cemeteries, the Santee Canal, and the construction of Lake Moultrie. At least ten different cabins appear to be represented, and they seem to contain one or two rooms. Some have clay chimneys and clapboard roofs. During construction of the lake, approximately 500 black families were relocated. It is likely that these cabins were located in the area now covered by Lake Moultrie. The typescripts are of three articles written by Hyde. The articles are titled: "Chicora -- Town and Cemetery" "Old Kate Cemetery (Colored)" and "Forward to this Portfolio.".
