Samuel Prioleau papers, 1811-1832

The marriage settlement of and letters to Samuel Prioleau. Marriage settlement (trust deed) of Hannah Motte Prioleau and Samuel Prioleau for property in trust with Hannah Prioleau's father, Major James Hamilton, property consisting of a fourth part of 65 slaves (listed by name) to which she would be entitled upon his death. A letter (1826 Sept. 15) from S.M. Drayton at Northhampton (Mass.) acknowledges the receipt of money, thanks Prioleau for his help, discusses tenant problems and renting and repairing her property on Church Street in Charleston (S.C.), relates her circumstances and income, and mentions family and friends. Another letter (1829 May 12) from Drayton also discusses her Church Street property, cost of repairs, tenants, rents, problems with upkeep, and the future professional aspirations of her fatherless son, William. A letter (1832 Aug. 31) from Thomas Henderson at Newport (R.I) notes he is sorry that Prioleau has been in poor health, but is glad he is improving. Henderson states he still wants his dividends since his claims and those of his family are being opposed by Col. Drayton and he has received only a small part of his claim. Henderson includes a copy of the letter (1832 June 23) he wrote to Prioleau from Washington (D.C.) which discusses the Committee on Revolutionary Claims and the senate bill for the settlement of his family's claims. He also states he is low on funds and asks Prioleau to remit his dividends.
