Collection Overview

Collection contains correspondence regarding Dr. Freeman's work in the Department of Biology of the College of Charleston and his fund-raising for the College. His personal file includes correspondence he received from presidents and other officials of the College, his 1990 commencement address, biographical information prepared when he was presented an honorary doctorate by the College in 1995, his efforts to create scholarship funds, and his efforts to influence legislation to benefit the College. Three additional files include extensive correspondence with donors of major scholarships: (1) The George Adam and Pierrine Smith Byrd Endowed Scholarship was created by George Adam Byrd and his wife, Pierrine St. Claire Smith, who in 1922 was the first woman graduate of the College and the first honor graduate of her class.; (2) The Alexander C. Dick Scholarship has biographical information and correspondence with Mr. Dick (Class of 1915, Rhodes Scholar, and lawyer) and with Mrs. Dick (Edwina Eustis, contralto soloist and musical therapist). This file also includes copies of recommendations for Mr. Dick to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and information about Mrs. Dick's career as a vocalist.; (3) The N. Edgar Miles Scholarship Program was created by Dr. Miles (Class of 1931 and ophthalmologist). Dr. Miles also created an endowment for the College's Early Childhood Development Center, and his file includes information about the creation of the Miles Community Center in Mullins, South Carolina.
