Audiovisual Materials, 1982-1997, undated

The majority of materials document Sandra Garfinkel Shapiro's youth, from her teenage years through her graduation from University of North Carolina in 1957, with the largest portion of the collection consisting of photographs of Sandra and her family and friends, including albums documenting her travel to Israel in 1952 and Mexico in 1954, and participation in Young Judaea events and conventions throughout her high school years. The collection also contains correspondence, mainly from Sandra to various family members and friends, diaries spanning 1949-1955, and high school yearbooks. Also included are extensive genealogical research files compiled by Sandra between the 1980s and early 2000s, containing family trees, passenger lists, family history forms, and handwritten notes. Also included are a number of materials documenting Morton Shapiro's family and his genealogical research, including extensive oral history interviews conducted by Shapiro with members of his family. Of particular note is an oral history interview with Morton himself, in which he discusses his work with labor unions, his involvement in the civil rights movement, and relations between Jews and African Americans in the South.
