Scope and Contents

Layden's scrapbook consists of original materials, including Layden's Army orders and promotions; identification cards; uniform patches; photographs of Layden taken in Louisiana, England, Belgium, and Germany; aerial reconnaissance photographs, including photographs of the beaches of Normandy prior to D-Day, taken by Layden's group, the 67th Tactical Reconnaisance Group of the Ninth Air Force; photographs of General Dwight D. Eisenhower taken when he visited the group on June 25, 1944; postcards collected by Layden in Louisiana, England, and France; newspaper clippings about the Ninth Air Force and Layden; and photographs taken in Buchenwald concentration camp after it was liberated, including victims' bodies, survivors, bunks, crematoria, and gallows.
