Scope and Contents

Correspondence and invoices concerning the change of command ceremony and final visit of the submarine U.S.S. L. Mendel Rivers before its decommissioning. Also included is a photocopied letter from Margaret Middleton Rivers Eastman (Peg) to the Commander of the submarine U.S.S. L. Mendel Rivers, David A. Portner following the Change of Command ceremonies for the submarine. Peg attached a number of letters she sent shortly after L. Mendel Rivers' death to campaign for the naming of a vessel in honor of L. Mendel Rivers. Also included is an unpublished character sketch of L. Mendel Rivers written in 1974 by Ralph de Teledano.
