4. FitzSimons and Good family materials
Collection Overview
The Trott family papers consists largely of genealogical materials documenting various related and inter-married families, with some primary materials included as well. The collection is composed of correspondence, photographs, brief family histories and genealogies, research notes, newspaper clippings, drawings of family crests, and other materials organized into series by family. The Trott family series contains research and social correspondence, notes, a photograph of a 1703 Nicholas Trott document, with information on the related Neyle family. The Hendricks/Hendrix family series consists of social correspondence, family histories, including data on Hamlins and Sinclairs, transcripts of information regarding the return of a sword belonging to a Union solider by family of Henry W. Hendricks, with material on the latter's CSA service in the Civil War, his imprisonment in prisoner of war camps, with a mention of Confederate spy Belle Boyd, his later service as Chief of Police, Charleston, S.C. and earlier listing of ports he visited (1841-1844) on the vessel, Cyane mostly in the Pacific. There is also a facsimile and transcript of his diary detailing everyday life in the Confederate States Army, partaking of battles in Virginia, and being a prisoner, with later recapitulations of his service, including a letter from Johnson Hagood. The series also documents the death of Corporal R.W. Ackis killed at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (1863), with data on other Ackis family members. The Gregorie and Venning family series includes correspondence, photos, newspaper clippings, brief family genealogies, information on Oakland Plantation, the Gregorie or Venning family cemetery and accounts of a gun fight at Myrtle Grove Plantation (1866) between the Gregories and a member of the Twenty First Regiment, US Colored Troops, with data on Anne King Gregorie by Flora B. Surles and the related Royal family. The FitzSimons and Good family series consists of brief genealogies, newspaper clippings, and a copy of the unpublished manuscript about dueling by Mabel Trott FitzSimons. The Cambridge, Cave, Wood, and Bailey family series contains brief family trees and genealogies, copies of various wills, and research notes. The other families series documents the Jasper, Hogarth, Wragg and Munro families, with an original miniature of Mrs. Margaret Russell Munro (circa 1790-1805) by an unknown artist. The organization applications series consists of the applications of Mabel Trott FitzSimons and Amanda Sinclair Hendricks to join various genealogical organizations and related materials. The miscellaneous materials series contains various small research notes, newspaper clippings, correspondence, pamphlets, photos, and the published diary of Robert Gilmor documenting an 1827 visit to Charleston. Three disbound scrapbooks of family materials comprise the final series.
