Biographical / Historical

Created March 1, 1867 as Dept. of Education. Re-established July 20, 1868 as Office of Education in the Dept. of the Interior. Designated as Bureau of Education under which title all the publications were issued until Oct. 1929, when the use in the future of the title Office of Education was announced. U. S. Office of Education was transferred from Dept. of the Interior to Federal Security Agency, effective July 1, 1939. By organization Plan 1 of 1953 the Federal Security Agency became the Dept. of Health, Education, and Welfare. A new Dept. of Education was established in 1980, and the functions of the Office of Education were transferred to this dept.
