Abstract

The Airbrush, Acrylic, and Acetylene Oral History Project contains three oral histories with three Charleston-area artists: Halim Abdul-Karim (jewelry designer), Elayna Shakur (visual artist), and Jafar Simmons (airbrush artist). The interviewees discuss their artistic practices, what brought them to the Charleston-area, why they decided to stay, and how they Lowcountry has impacted their artistic practices. The oral history project was conducted by Alada Shinault-Small in 1999.

Abstract

William Henry Jackson of Charleston, South Carolina was an African- American artist and a graduate of The Art Institute of Chicago. He was encouraged and supported by various white artists and this collection summarizes his professional journey and achievements through resumes, diplomas, correspondence, fellowship letters and invitation from art galleries in S and Connecticut. The collection also consists on his art work and art collections.

Abstract The League of Allied Arts (LAA) is an organization of Black women who celebrate and help to locally advance a plethora of elements of high culture. The organization was initially founded in Los Angeles, CA, in 1939, however, Edwina Whitlock created a new branch of the organization upon her relocation back to Charleston, South Carolina, in 1986.
