Collection Overview

Five series make up the collection. Administration Records include constitutions, minutes, and reports submitted from the local union to the international executive board. They also include membership cards, dues booklets, and applications for membership. The series on correspondence is organized chronologically by decade and include applications for membership, receipts, correspondence b/w local and exec regarding finances, jobs, and members. Printed Materials consist of a variety of published and unpublished printed documents including a large series of circulars printed by the international executive board for distribution to all subordinate unions; Financial Records consist of dues and receipt books, financial correspondence, job steward reports, and finance-related things; Miscellaneous items include a rare bronze medal received by Charleston Bricklayers Local No. 1 during the 1901-1902 South Carolina Inter-State and West Indian Exposition, a few photographs and a memorial ribbon. Of note is a proposal by the Charleston County Council re the Hospital Workers’ Strike of 1969 and the conditions and terms under which workers may be allowed to return to hospital employment.

Historical Note

Local No. 1 SC Union of Bricklayers’ and Allied Craftworkers was organized in 1881 in Charleston, SC and incorporated in 1900. It was federated with the International Union of Bricklayers’ and Allied Craftworkers, founded in 1865. The union was integrated, mainly African American, and advocated for fair wages, member benefits, and safe working conditions. It stressed solidarity among members and included in its union bricklayers, tile setters, stone masons, and plasterers. In 1999, Local No. 1 merged with Local No. 33 based in Atlanta, GA with jurisdiction over North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
